The idea behind Slightly Creaky

We all get slightly creaky with age

The first slight twinge of "old age" probably arrived before you reached 30. By 40, you lifted with your knees, not at your waist. By 50 you were no longer the fastest jogger or the person who could... whatever physical attribute it was that impressed others when you were "at your peak."

Although we may be slightly creaky, we are far from old. Such people are ten or fifteen years older than us, or the guy down the street. We are active, we travel, entertain, socialize, are still involved. And we intend to stay involved.

Taking a look at the list of topics on the left-side navigation bar, you can see what Slightly Creaky is all about. We try to find the easiest way for you to get the resources you need for travel, to pursue your hobbies, to get the occasional medical and health news you need, or a support group when that inevitable diagnosis hits someone you know. We are also a community, a place for slightly creaky people to share ideas.

We are not for everyone. If you have given up on life, if your idea of excitement is the TV remote, or if you have settled into a routine, you will probably find little of interest here. If you want to find information about geocaching, the best hot air ballooning tours, if you want to fix a warped door, or if you just need an idea for what to do on your next vacation, we hope we can assist.

Slightly Creaky

Developed for those 55 and older
(but anyone can use it).

What happened the last time you used a search engine? 23,000 entries on 10,000 pages? There is a huge amount of information on the Internet, but it's not always easy to find just what you are looking for.

Slightly Creaky has been developed by a former AOL manager with considerable online research experience. We spend hundreds of hours every month searching through thousands of links looking for the ones slightly creaky people would use. Besides the obvious medical and health links, we provide information on travel, lifestyles, and home repair, while providing hundreds of suggestions for new hobbies, activities, and ways of being productive and keeping busy.

The index to the left shows an overview of these things, but we go far deeper. For example, in the "On the Table" category we include links to recipes, caloric counters, nutrition articles, and, well, whatever we may find and like. Many of the items have been submitted by viewers.

We annotate every entry so you know what the site contains before you click. Our 2,300-plus support group and medical information links provide alphabetical lists of ailments, including "orphan" diseases, with links to support and informational sites. Since it's doubtful you could tell what the "The Magic Foundation" is, for example, simply by its name, we give you an in-depth description. In most cases we copy the mission statements or purposes directly from the site. We try not to editorialize.

More than just links, Slightly Creaky wants to provide first-person experiences of slightly creaky people, those who are feeling the ailments of their age, but still remain active. Thus we seek volunteers to write brief (200 to 400 word) columns on a variety of topics, from geocaching to storm chasing, to thoughts on medical practices and pharmaceuticals. In fact, we encourage all of our readers to submit articles on any topic at any time.

Suggestions are always welcomed.

The People Behind Slightly Creaky

Hal Rosengarten

Co-founder, Editor, Webmaster

A Baby Boomer by birth, a teacher by profession, Hal has a lengthy history of volunteerism throughout New York's Hudson Valley. Now retired as an elementary level teacher and a program manager for AOL, he is using his 30 plus years knowledge of computers and his experiences on the Internet to research and compile information for those who, like himself, are slightly creaky.

Roberta Rosengarten

Co-founder, Editor, Consumer Advocate, Volunteer Coordinator

As a polio survivor with a hip replacement and a new knee, Roberta recognizes the importance of keeping both mentally and physically focused. Refusing to give up her active lifestyles, she continues to travel, swim, and live life to the fullest by altering her approach to such activities. Roberta coordinates our research and volunteer teams.
